15 years ago (yesterday), Pantera played what would become their last live show. Here’s a video of Hostile from that night with special guest, Kerry King

A very special person was born on this day, 50 years ago! The late, great Dimebag Darrell.

Make sure lots of blacktooths are flowing today. That’s how Dime would have wanted it! Forever missed. Happy 50th Dime!

Sterling Winfield on Recording With Pantera and Modern Metal

Sterling Winfield is angry. Not from the years of hanging around with Pantera as their engineer, producer and tour tech. Not because Dimebag is gone. It’s the haunting feeling that the way Dime and the band did things is dying.

He has plenty of evidence to back this up. From his days as an engineer at Dallas Sound Lab in the early ‘90s through his work with Pantera on the Grammy-nominated albums Reinventing The Steel and Far Beyond Driven, Sterling had a front row seat to the way metal albums used to be recorded.

Today Winfield works primarily from his own studio, Boot Hill, with a broad spectrum of artists, including hip-hop, R&B, country, blues, choral, jazz and orchestral. Among his recent projects, he produced and engineered metal band Texas Hippie Coalition’s latest release, Dark Side Of Black, produced and mixed Canadian hard rock band A Rebel Few’s new album, As The Crow Flies.

He also collaborated with Erykah Badu on the track “Maiysha,” her contribution to Robert Glasper’s Miles Davis tribute album, Everything’s Beautiful. So his perspective isn’t exactly that of a “metal guy” insulated from the rest of the recording world.

While he was co-producing War Paint, his seventh album with progressive rock band Vangough, I had a chance to dive in with him on the metal world’s dangerous creep into DAW massaging and the way things used to be.

The second disc also features a newly remixed version of the title track, rough mixes for “Drag The Waters” and “The Underground In America”, as well as instrumental takes for “13 Steps To Nowhere” and “Living Through Me (Hell’s Wrath)”. In addition to the studio recordings, the anniversary collection features three live tracks recorded at the Dynamo Festival in Holland in 1998: “War Nerve”, “Suicide Note Pt. We are so sad and disappointed to hear that Christina Grimmie was gunned down the same way that Dimebag Darrell was.

After Dime’s murder, we all prayed that our industry (i.e. club owners & promoters) would do whatever they needed to do to protect artists from gun wielding fanatics. Sadly, that’s not the case and another rising star had to pay the consequences with her life. SOMETHING NEEDS TO CHANGE! RIP Christina & RIP Dime, Jeff Thompson, Erin Halk, and Nathan Bray.

Rolling Stone Magazine: Hear Hellyeah Cover Phil Collins With Lost Dimebag Darrell Guitar Performance

Heavy metal supergroup Hellyeah had finished recording the basic tracks for fifth album Unden!able when they started throwing around ideas for a cover song to add to the mix. Guitarist Christian Brady suggested the 1982 Phil Collins song “I Don’t Care Anymore,” and drummer Vinnie Paul burst out laughing — not because he thought it was a bad idea, but because he and his late brother Dimebag Darrell, both of legendary metal band Pantera, recorded the track around 10 years ago with their follow-up band Damageplan. The version went unused.

Dimebag’s Dean of Destiny: A story of friendship and Dimebag”s famous Dean from Hell ML

A short, teenage boy equipped with twigs for appendages hides behind his weapon of choice: a cherry sunburst Dean. With the guitar covering most of his torso, the adolescent is about to embark into a world of scrupulous eyes and experienced, calloused fingers. Although he’s one of the youngest competitors, he looks calm, refreshed and at home all alone on the stage. The judges prepare their scorecards, the crowd continues to settle in and several contestants snicker at the prospect of this ‘child’ surpassing their skill and talent levels. As the spotlight recedes from the back of the room and greets the youngster with a bright ‘hello,’ his teased and feathered brown hair is saturated with sweat. Not the sweat of a nervous novice, but the anticipatory perspiration of victory and confidence. The audience and fellow competitors are about to learn a lesson: looks can be deceiving.

New interview with Scott Ian: “Dimebag made drinking look like Disney World.”

Scott Ian recently sat down with MAMMOTH METAL for a video interview. He talked a little about Dime at 2:45 and then again at 10:00.

musicradar.com: 7 rare Dimebag performances you need to hear

When Anthrax found themselves making Stomp 442 without a lead guitarist, they approached Dimebag. Scott Ian recently told us, “He came to the studio, we hung out for a couple of days. We wanted to pay him but he wouldn’t take our money because we were friends. We said we had to do something for him and he said, ‘Alright, I want this video camera.’ We bought him the best video camera that was out at the time.”
